January 28th 2010:
HAMANN
AG sets new priorities
According
to a statement of the management of HAMANN AG, the company will implement
strategic changes to their portfolio as of 31st of January 2010.
From the four product areas, namely waste water treatment and potable water
production, as well as ballast water treatment and exhaust gas cleaning, the
later two will be temporarily closed.
Just in
2008, as the world’s first company, HAMANN AG had received the approval for
their SEDNA® ballast water treatment system that used PERACLEAN® Ocean, a
chemical substance developed by Evonik-Degussa GmbH. The Type Approval, that
included some special conditions, had been issued by the German Hydrographical
Institute (BSH). “The SEDNA® system itself is working beautifully. However,
recent findings showed, that the degradation of PERACLEAN® Ocean requires
further testing”, explained Mathias Schmidt, product manager for ballast water
at HAMANN. Recent scientific publications also addressed this issue,
contributing the decision of HAMANN AG to temporarily resign from the ballast
water treatment market.
“We produce
equipment for the shipping industry, which has to be operational, no matter
when or where”, explained Falk Schäfer, CEO of HAMANN AG. He further stated
that the existing patents of the SEDNA® system will be maintained.
“The HAMANN
AG will focus on their core business, the treatment of waste water, and will
further expand in this area.” Mr. Schäfer stated. The HAMANN AG has a long
history in this field and they are the world market leader for sewage treatment
systems on yachts. Experts in this field are also sure that the new generation
of HAMANN waste water treatment systems, “HL-Cont PLUS” and “Super Mini PLUS”
(both certified according to MEPC.159(55)) will contribute to an even
strengthened position of HAMANN in this market. At present, the new waste water
treatment technology is scaled to be needs of passenger ships, and will become
available at the end of 2010. HAMANN is planning also to approach new segments
of the market with this technology. “The focus is on land based systems for
small communities and hotels”, detailed Schäfer. This will also trig further
synergistic effects for the product range of fresh water production.
HAMANN will
continue its efforts and investments in R&D for new products, in order to
strengthen its innovative power and to meet the constantly increasing
environmental challenges that are imposed on the maritime industry.
